In hashing, the route is not known at the outset and it is the job of the hounds to find the correct trail laid by the hares. Hares will lay the trail with a series of markings, typically using flour or sawdust. Common markings used at Didcot and their meanings are described below.
On finding the first blob, a call of 'ON ONE' is made. For the second blob 'ON TWO'. Three consecutive blobs indicate the correct trail is being followed and a shout of 'ON ON' signals this to the rest of the pack.
A check is used to indicate that the trail can go off in any direction. It is up to the hounds to find the correct trail marked with three blobs from this point. Didcot Hash usually require six hounds to reach the check before any are permitted to start checking, this helps keep the pack together.
A false indicates that the trail does not proceed any further in this direction. The hounds should turn around, return to the last check, and try a different way.
A special check that tells the pack that they should wait until ALL the hounds have arrived before continuing.
An opportunity for hashers to regroup, take in the view and get a picture. Extra points to the hare if Didcot Power Station or Wittenham Clumps can be spotted.
Approximately 300 metres before the pub, the On Inn indicates that the end is nigh and a well earned drink awaits.
An arrow is used to show the correct direction of the trail. It is used when no check is wanted or to guide the pack directly away / over hazards without hesitation.
The hounds have been caught out! A fish hook indicates that the hounds should back-track to find a 'devious' change of direction.
Sometimes a number will be used to help keep the pack together. The first n number of runners that reach it must turn around and run to the back of the pack.
